A speeding SUV broke several barricades and plowed into a Christmas Parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin on Sunday evening, killing several people and injuring others in a horrifying incident that was captured by the city’s livestream of the parade and phone footage recorded by several onlookers.

Key Facts

In a press conference on Sunday night, Waukesha Police Chief Dan Thompson confirmed that “some” people had died, but refused to give an exact number, although earlier media reports had pegged the death toll at one.

The police said they have a person of interest in custody along with the speeding vehicle that caused the tragedy.

Thompson also noted that a police officer on the scene discharged his weapon in an attempt to stop the speeding vehicle.

The city’s Fire Chief Steven Howard said 11 adults and 12 children were injured and rushed to a nearby hospital by his department.

A spokesperson for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee announced that a Catholic priest, several parishioners and students of the Waukesha Catholic school were among those injured.
