Ondo: NSCDC goes tough on boat, ferry transporters flouting safety rule

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Ondo State Command, has vowed to henceforth arrest boat and ferry transporters endangering people’s lives across the water ways in the state.

According to the NSCDC, waterways transporters flouting safety rules on water ways within the state will no longer be speared as avoidable accidents will be prevented by all means.

The Command’s Spokesperson, Olufemi Omole disclosed that the Commandant, Hammed Abodunrin, had deployed personnel to specific locations in the state towards preventing potential disaster.

Omole said the move became imperative following the incessant boat accidents in the riverine of the state where no fewer than four lives had been claimed.

While stressing that the necessary safety rules would be enforced, Omole added that many had also been injured in avoidable boat accidents in the state.

He said the Commandant “lamented on the previous Boat mishap at Ilaje Local Government Area which claimed the life of one (1) passenger leaving fifteen (15) others wounded as a result of over-speeding and refusal to use Life Jackets. In addition, He sighted the recent night occurrence when a Speed Boat left Ugbonla for Igbenefa in Ilaje and encountered a collision with a bigger wooden boat from the high sea leading to the death of One and four passengers terribly injured.

“It is high time our people placed premise on the value of human life; we have warned repeatedly that no transporter or passenger should travel the water ways without putting on their Life Jackets. Henceforth, the Command Marine Special force would be on patrol and violators be arrested.”
