“Berlin is red”, Union’s Awoniyi celebrates derby victory against Hertha Berlin

Super Eagles forward Taiwo Awoniyi fired Union Berlin to a derby win against city rivals Hertha Berlin in Saturday’s German Bundesliga game.

Awoniyi who was left of Super Eagles squad for the last International break proved, he’s one of the best finishers in Germany with another fantastic goal.

The 24-year-old grabbed the opener for the ironists defeated in the 8th minute, after pouncing on a mistake from Hertha Berlin’s defender Marton Dardai.

Awoniyi has now taken his tally in the German top flight to eight goals in 12 league games, and only Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland have scored more.

Christopher Trimmel doubled Union Berlin’s lead with another goal in the 30th minute and it proved to be the winner as no goal was scored in the second half.

The three points ended Union Berlin’s recent fruitless run after picking just one point from the last three league outings (two defeats, one draw).

The Thomas Fischer’s men now moved to fifth position on 20 points in the league standing, after 12 games.
