One in five U.S. adults who are fully vaccinated against Covid-19 have received a booster shot, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a new milestone for vaccinations bolstered by the agency’s expansion of booster shot eligibility.

Key Facts

The CDC says over 36 million fully vaccinated American adults had taken a Covid-19 booster shot as of Tuesday, and the country averaged around 758,000 new boosters per day in the weeklong period ending Thursday.

The CDC recorded its first major bump in booster shots after making seniors and adults with underlying health conditions or high-risk jobs eligible for an extra dose of Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine in late September, with average daily boosters more than quadrupling to 400,000 a week after the decision.

One week after the CDC recommended booster shots for all Johnson & Johnson vaccine recipients and high-risk Moderna recipients in late October, the average number of daily booster shots administered in the United States rose again from 335,000 to over 820,000.

The CDC made all adults eligible for booster shots on Friday, regardless of vaccine type, but the agency hasn’t reported a daily average since then.

Big Number

Over 19 million. That’s how many people ages 65 and older have received a booster shot, amounting to 41.5% of the U.S. elderly population.

Key Background

Facing a coronavirus surge, states like Colorado, Utah and Maine expanded Covid-19 booster shot eligibility to all adults before the CDC gave its approval last week. Colorado grappled with a hospital capacity crunch when the state broadened eligibility two weeks ago, with 95% of intensive care unit beds and 94% of medical surgical beds occupied at the time. New Mexico also cited a rise in Covid-19 infections and hospitalizations when it gave all adults permission to take booster shots almost two weeks ago. California hasn’t faced a surge yet, but it expanded booster shot eligibility to all adults earlier this month due to concerns over a potential winter Covid-19 spike.
